About Backhouse Insurance
There has been a Backhouse Brokers in business for the past 80 odd years. John Backhouse first started in Manchester with one office, built up with satellite offices around the UK and then sold in 63' to what was then a big Group called Stenhouse.
Steve Backhouse (son) always worked in the business, and became its Director of Surety Bonds, which is a specialist part of insurance usually to the construction trade. A small satellite business, bought in Burnley many years before, was run by Steve, this he built it up with just a few staff, gradually adding on more and more clients to the list, where he also supplied Surety Bonds as well as General insurances.
The Backhouse's always believed in the personal service one gives to clients, so that nobody ever became a name and a number. That applies to-day more than ever. Relationships are built up with clients over a number of years, and there is trust on both sides.
The business in Burnley thrived, it was called W.l.Mercer & Co., and like his Father, Steve opened other offices in Stockport, Cheshire and Manchester. Tragically, in 1974 he was killed in a plane crash, and his widow, Shirley Backhouse, who had worked for the company in Stockport for quite a few years, took over as Chairman supported at that time by a very loyal staff who had been with the company for a good few years. She was joined by her son, Bill Backhouse, and later still by a grandson, Steve, who worked with the company until he joined the Navy some years later. Bill Backhouse is no longer actively working in the company, but retains a family interest.
Shirley Backhouse is still Chairman at the present time, and is still ably supported by a very loyal staff, some of whom have been with the company for between twenty and thirty years. The personal service to clients is still of paramount importance, and we all strive to give the best service and support we can to all of our clients.
The specialist areas of insurance that we still deal with are detailed for you, on this web site, by other Directors' of the Group. The name of the company was changed to the SBG Group some twenty years ago, and is a very well known and respected name throughout the insurance profession.
